Monteverdi

To Mass and to Cadogan to get seats which were not in a good place for sketching and yet there were empty seats on the other side! Anu Komsi soprano, a violinist who sang and harmonium player, Lovely harp. A delightful Cadogan Finnish folk prom. At CML an assistant brought full score of Gurrelieder far too big to use at the prom. Fruit tart and cappuccino at Peter Jones before Cadogan. Came home with scores and lunch.  The Monteverdi vespers was a bit of an endurance test. I prefer bel canto to con belto. Pygmalion the French group. Got a bus and train and home by 10.30.

James MacMillan

Not a good start. Came out of Purley station to see rail replacement bus driving off. I pointed out to the staff that my train was delayed and he replied that he did not know and station staff should have told him. As a 30 minute gap now on 407 which I could have done in the first place or better still drive. Have complained to southern. Lost practice time.  Played Bach and Walther on Liebster Jesu. Sang David Ogden's Christ has no body. Dennis took Liz to Mass and took us for roast pork lunch at the Conquering Hero. Talk on Europe. MacMillan European Requiem impressive, Beethoven 9 less so. Soprano not good, flute not in tune.

Ignatius

An excellent day with lunch at Hurtado centre Wapping studying Hurtado and watching a new Spanish film about Ignatius Loyola. VERY Spanish and overlong but interesting.  At Mass the offertory procession organiser was not there so had to go get the gifts myself with Michael so there was a hiatus. You would have thought the person concerned would have arranged cover. Rain and missed 52 so went home listening to the Brahms. The interval talk on happiness was interesting and I enjoyed the Sawyer and the Haydn. The audience fell neatly into the trap and applauded before the real end! I have been asking for more Haydn at the Proms so ironically I get to not be there! Liz on way home from Lourdes apparently on the same plane as the gang! Sunday Arrived home 12,30.  Not a good start. Came out of Purley station to see rail replacement bus driving off. I pointed out to the staff that my train was delayed and he replied that he did not know and station staff should have told him. As a 3...

The sea

To Mass. Dr Ojo removed last 2 stitches - I can swim again!  Lovely concert by Follia at St Mary at Hill. Lovely to see  Yat-Soon Y eo  and the girls. Part of the Bach St Anne's festival. Did 2 sketches. To National Portrait Gallery.  Lovely exhibition The encounter at NPG but too busy to sketch. BP award very busy but some good works. Excellent preprom talk on the sea in Greek and Atlantic worlds. Brian Cunliffe on good form. Korngold,  I don't believe it. A second choral work where words could not be heard at all. Sirens by Hillborg might as well have been in Ancient Greek. Some walked out. Some effective writing. Scherazade ruined by family 3 boys running about. Who made this a family Prom? Unsuitable. Attention spans are short these days and the Rimsky has many quiet passages. No steward in gallery. Complained. Watched end of gay history programme and bits of Sargent prom.

Tchaikovsky

Mass and art. Interfaith lunch was enjoyable and had a good chat about truth to Fr David walking to our cars. Went to Battersea to collect mosaics in the mddle of bingo. Decided to park at Selhurst.  A really unpleasant 52 bus ride to the hall. Woman in front of me put purse up to pay and said the man in front of her is with me. She then argued with the black driver and was very rude to him and other passengers. In the end the driver drove off and the man got a free ride but the driver should have called 999 and had them both arrested as the man kept on talking to him when he was driving which is dangerous. I have reported to tfl and praised the driver for keeping calm and polite under extreme provocation. Had I been quicker I would have discretely videoed the incident on my mobile phone.  Super Tchaik 6 and well done Mena for ignoring applause and going on into 4th movement. Not happy with Mark Simpson interesting talk but not to be able to hear a single word in a choral wor...

Liszt

No Mass today as I was due to see Dr Ojo at 10 and in fact very short wait. He took out stitches but two come out on Friday. He gave me wipes and cream. To St Michael's for  a  disappointing recital especially as I seldom get there. Saw Howard and Dorio. Why did Enrico Presti play so much unusual music with no respite? The Shostakovich, Bossi, Liszt and Respighi he played very unrepresentative of their work and so discordant. I got my glasses adjusted at Boots and got the cream for my arm. To Fairfield collection at Museum of Croydon -  a few interesting picture and items. i plan to send in my memories of the hall. Got to the hall early and it was damp so chatted. The preprom talk on orchestration by Liszt and Ravel given by David Owen Norris was excellent and enlightening and I took a fresh look at the scores.  Really enjoyed the Liszt and Mussorgsky prom especially after the preprom talk. Forget the Julian Anderson which is not a piano concerto.

Diana

Mass St James day.  Catching up on TV watching Diana our mother.  Diana her fashion story at Kensington Palace beautiful dresses and photos as is the garden which is white for 20 years on.  Excellent John Wilson prom RVW 9 and Planets. Glad I went to preprom talk as broadcast left out 2 stories from Tony Palmer. Holst's room at St Paul's had double glazing so he could be hot for his arthritis. His pen was strapped to his hand. All composers dread old age. Britten was 52 when Prince Philip remarked at Snape "What has the old man written this time?" Britten was so angry he sent the newspaper cutting back to the critic saying you may never come here again and do not call me old!! Home by 9.30 so watched Proms extra and Japanese cities.

Sir Malcolm Sargent

To Mass. Went to Battersea to get mosaics but found room locked as flower arrangers not there. Contacted Pat and she will let me know when I can go again in the morning. Home for lunch. Played for 2.30 funeral at Caterham. No coffin! We were told very little about Carole apart from her love of travel and arranging trips through the Miller centre! I played Faure, Vierne, Moore and Handel. To preProm talk on Sargent - he was a Christian and stayed in England during the War working incredibly hard. First conducted at 14 and Henry Wood allowed him to conduct his composition. He saw himself as the music not the musicians for whom he had little empathy denying them contracts and pensions! No wonder they did not like him!  I first saw him when I was aged 14 when my Dad arranged for both of us to sit in front of the huge Johannesburg Town Hall organ. Harry Stanton played the organ for The Planets and was shown how to do the glissando with both arms! For some reason we wore evening dress p...

Karg-Elert

I played Peeters and Karg-Elert on Nun danket and Finale of Mendelssohn 6. The hymn Beneath the cross I fain would take my stand. I fain must go to Waitrose? came to mind.  Voces 8 on Songs of praise!  Listening to the Ten Pieces prom. Nasty BBC for not letting the Prom season ticket holders attend on our passes. Why the sailors hornpipe at Hull and Ten pieces prom (twice)? Enjoying Haitink again on TV. Poldark and world diving. Miranda Hart hilarious.

Organ

Excellent morning at RFH as part of St Alban's organ festival. Saw Matthew Martin. Attractive work by him for trumpet and organ. Lovely Angelus by Vierne. Rheinberger violin and organ. Cochereau Bolero organ and side drum played by Marko Sever. Well done all especially Joseph Beech and James Orford. People power at Imperial War museum excellent.   S ent letter to The Tablet as Rick Jones did not know what Levit's encore was so told him to check BBC proms website. Critics!  An excellent appeal for Aid to the Church in need at the cathedral Mass. Presented Joseph with his 18th birthday card and present. Listening to prom on way home. Reckoned I would be late at the hall and not get in for the Strauss Actually the Beethoven 3 chat was first. Skype to Liz in Lourdes. Listened to prom from Hull.

Fidelio

Suggestions from the interfaith group about Laudato Si'. Do not drive to church use public transport. Recycle. The cathedral uses one leaflet per weekend for Masses and recycles those left over. Change basic attitudes to creation through education. Preach about it!! Took Liz to East Croydon and Lourdes via Toulouse for a week. To Mass. Worked on scores and quiet day. To Thornton Heath library to see my pictures on display. To the hall.  Went to Sackler gallery. Black American photos. You have to queue for Grayson Perry at the Serpentine gallery described as the most popular art exhibition ever so will go another day. What about the Hockney? Rather off putting advert.  Fidelio prom and talk excellent especially Stuart Skelton and the Spanish chorus. The ladies resplendent in white satin! Orfeon Donostiarra which city? Home in heavy rain and late.

Benedetti

Delightful Keralan lunch with Fr Xavier, Sr John Mary, Maud and Jennie in East Ham. Got to first part of preprom talk on Sibelius 2. Stupendous Shostakovich October and violin concerto 1 with Nichols Benedetti. She plays throughout. Love Sibelius 2.  Roy Sutherland the director the Buddhist Jamyang centre let me down again so I led a lively discussion on Laudato Si.  A very odd Prom first half did not excite and Berlioz OK. Home late due to wait for bus and train.Lots of flies. Thursday to mass and art - good work on leopard. To Balham library by car for scores. Saw 3 staff I appointed and Jeremy's daughter. Excellent recital at St John's by Geoffrey Morgan well played and presented. Met John Belcher and Christopher Herrick! Skipped John Williams prom. Loved the story about the O level student who in desperation wrote Bach wrote a lot of pieces for the Associated Board!

Monteverdi

To mosaic - have not been there for weeks and now we have a gap until September. Two superb concerts. Monteverdi with I Fagiolini at the Cadogan Hall and the BBC National orchestra of Wales playing Sibelius 7, Rach pno con 2 and Shostakovich 10. In between to central music library to get scores.

Haitink

Played Mendelssohn 6. Louise and her daughters sang in choir. Archdeacon of Reigate preached and gave us a seed. She is keen to get chaplains into schools and have after school services.  Haitink as wonderful as ever love the Schumann 2 slow movement theme and the Mendelssohn scherzo an inspired encore. Birtwhistle cannot be bothered with him. Elgar 2 enjoyed it. The end of an empire played by a German orchestra with an Israeli conductor how suitable for our troubled country. Great discontent that depsite being so early one cannot attend the preProm events without losing queue place.

Elgar

John Webber played Elgar at St John Goose Green.  I was late as the sign at Peckham Rye is pointing the wrong way. Richard Pilliner there and met Peter Shore pupil of Marilyn's. I have been playing the Vesper voluntaries too fast.  An enjoyable Beckenham President's lunch  at 11 Village Way - Sandy and John O'Sullivan on good form.  he choir of St David's cathedral Cardiff sang Neville, Gibbons and Bainton beautifully at Mass. A long gospel meant I was late at RAH but I could not get in as gallery and arena were full. At least Liz heard it. John now on way home via Kent House. The weekend prom passes and BBC policies mean that this may well happen again. It is not an encouragement to spend £240 on a season if you are not guaranteed entry. Heard a lot of Elgar 1 on radio 3.

Victoria Falls 2

Took tablet 2 a.m. Emails. Up early and walked to the Falls. "Guide" 200 wanted more. Got wet crossing bridge but had rain macs Knifeedge bridge, fantastic views and rainbow. Unimpressed by Livingstone statue. Breakfast after we had changed and everything dried out by the time we left. To clinic £70. Doctor joked about sharpening his scalpel. Paid and pointed out a couple of faults electric plug and manager came straight away. Booked assistance the whole way. Must try and elevate leg and watch out for pins and needles. Packed and last minute search for locks. Tip to dancers for photos. Coach to airport K100 to porter so all Zambian money gone. Liz bought a lovely crib. 50 minute wait. Wrong seats on main flight back to Heathrow but in fact it was better being in the middle as I could stretch across 2 seats. Safely home best holiday ever. Glad to say leg cleared up thanks to treatment.

Victoria Falls

Image
Woke 4.30 a.m. dreaming about St Mark's Yeoville people Mrs Wilson and little old ladies who liked chatting to me! Strange how African nights bring back faces from the past the Gordons, Heather Brokenshire, Mum and Dad, Vi and Brien - all gone to glory. Was Killor right to link the zebra mother to my dream about Mum with black and white striped hair? I think so. Leg hurting a bit. Read 500 emails. Sent one to Rob and Ann. Breakfast very good delicious pancake saw Jim, Liz and Ryan from the train last night. Walked to the Falls and took the scenic route but not such great views. War memorial and zebras and giraffe in hotel grounds.  To helicopter which was fantastic 20 minute flight - along the gorge is incredibly exciting. Fantastic views over the falls - amazing. Truly the flight of angels. Bought the video and made one of Liz playing the marimba. Got cash and to clinic foot not as warm and wound clearing up well. Lunch with Castle lager by the pool. Had a sleep and to activity...

First night

Mass. Dr Ojo removed mole on left arm. Stitches out in 10 days and cream  for my leg. Sorted scores. Draft keep the date for October 8th.  First night of the Proms turned out to be enjoyable. Lovely Beethoven sensitively played and lovely singing in John Adams' Harmonium and it so hard - it makes Beethoven 9 look easy! Good to see everyone again and we were in our usual seats watching TV performers. Liz spoke to Chi Chi about Shaku.

Sargent

Gorgeous watercolours by John Singer Sargent at Dulwich gallery. His treatment of water and light is magical especially Venice and some unusual views of Jerusalem, alligators, bulls and Bologna.

Art

Swam 20, Mass, Penge library to collect 2 scores I had reserved, Anerley Post Office to send parcel to Bruce Freepost, art.

Lord Patten

Swam, Mass St Benedict's day.  I have 2 pairs of new glasses. Screen printed a tote bag at Whitgift centre with BRIT school students.  Accident at Victoria and flood in underpass meant I was late seeing my spiritual director. It seems I once again need to review my activities and learn to say No. The Royal Academy summer exhibition a curate's egg. I found only 2 that I wanted to draw. Gilbert and George offensive and silly. Lovely Charles Tunnicliffe RA exhibition. Always interesting to see what sells. Some awful pictures!  Lord Patten fascinating talk at LSE covering identity politics, patriotism, Hong Kong and Brexit. Met Liz at St Anselm and St Cecilia servers council. Heavy rain and my new bag got wet. Wed watched Wimbledon - Murray out. Catch up on blog. To Dulwich meetng 32 there. Liz stayed at Acton.

Sadiq Khan

Swam 20, Mass, to St Michael Cornhill very competent playing from Ian Le Grice. To Tate Modern to see the work by Fahrelnissa Zeid and tea in the members room on 8th floor. I am glad they did not win Museum of the Year award - I still the new section is unattractive and confusing. LV1 to Somerset House and a fascinating display about perfume and a demonstration by an amusing parfumier. Why would you pay a fortune for a perfume smelling of hazelnuts or incense? Just open Nutella or go to a High Mass! Killian Wells perfume Dark Rain wierd smell. Cortauld have Bloomsbury design and The Body unbound Corpus - did some sketches. To LSE packed meeting addressed by Sadiq Khan and given a copy of Good growth by design. Buses home diverted round the triangle.

Grangewood Park

Image
To Selhurst train delayed so drove to Norwood Junction. Train on time then delayed at East Croydon. Why can't trains run on time?  Played Sheep may safely graze and Finlandia favourites of Liz's Mum and Dad. I also played Come unto him from Messiah. Train cancelled so on buses home.  Enjoyed the sunshine at Friends of Grangwood park picnic and excellent Norwood society tour of the park. Bought some good local history books. Saw Claire Kedves  Dennis Woodhouse   Ann- Marie Woodhouse  and Henry.  How I enjoy a recital where we smile and Bridget West certainly achieved that. Very elegant playing at Dulwich. The Tambling based on Sagina prompted me to sing "And can it be that Daniel is wearing shorts?" Nice eats. Interesting programme on 90 years of Wimbledon.

Stanmore

St Lawrence Whitchurch Little Stanmore played Handel and Andriessen Handel visited and Chandos anthems first sung here. Our guide was gallery prommer Stewart! I had been there before.  Excellent mushroom pie and Sir Titus beer outside at Grimsdyke former home of W.S.Gilbert who was a one for the ladies. The Nicholson organ in Pinner parish church rather disappointing. Tried to visit the Linleys but they were out so had tea in the park. Bishop Nicholas confirmed 19 at Mass. I need a thinner cassock! Liz was at St Vincent's schol fair and went back to Acton for post fete outing.

Stonyhurst

Swam 20, Mass. Petrol. It is hot. Good playing from David Price of Thailand (?) at St Michael Bedford Park. Excellent talk on Stonyhurst treasures. Interesting that Mary Queen of Scots prayed in Latin and knew 5 languages. Watched Thomas Quasthoff on lieder and Schonbrunn concert.

Aspirations

Swam 20, to art and worked on new picture, saw manager about security. To Balham library and picked up a lot of scores. I took the car as it is hot!  really enjoyed the careers aspirations evening at St Thomas the Apostle Nunhead - students very impressive like speed dating told my story12 times! Met an amzing guy Paul who travels and prepares luxury holidays and another guy who designs bllboards. Quite a few Catenians there.Nice eats and Pimms.Brendand Fitzgerald gave me a lift.

Counter terrorism

To Stratford picture house for ROH Otello Chorus and set brilliant and Jonas Kaufmann fantastic. Iago evil, lovely Desdemona very moved at the end. Programmes on Britain beneath your feet, Queen Mary liner and Roger Bannister. To Ciaran's assembly - he had a lovely Indian coat. Marius cancelled our meeting for the third tme so went with Lou to Oxygen. Sean loved the trampolines. Had coffee at Costa. Liz went to the volunteers party at school. Read A Marriage of inconvenience - British behaved appallingly.  Very interesting Croydon police session on counter terrorism. Advice in an attack Run Hide Tell.

KCSP sports

Mass for St Thomas at Anerley. To Secret garden to get plants to complement the ones from church fete. To Julie Rose stadium Ashford for Kent Catholic schools partnership sports day. Presented 3 Catenian cups as I did last year and Catenian banners and leaflets out! It overran badly but enjoyed it. Lunch was provided this year! 110 mile round drive. Did some networking with teachers and KCSP staff. My little moan about evensong on Face book has led to a positive offer to come on October 1st and sing!  Norwood Catenians 9 brothers enjoying the circle and chatting about grandchildren and holidays!

Evensong

2 people at evensong and both agreed they did not wish to chant the psalm. I played Adoro te of Boellmann and Thiman on Hanover also some Stanley. Jerry thought we could have sing the psalm. As we did not do so for the last 3 evensongs I followed precedent. I think it would have been very tricky to play and sing an unfamiliar psalm. Any way Shona is playing for the summer ones and I do not have to go again until October. I think it cannot last at £40 a go. It all seems so pointless. Watched Antiques roadshow and Poldark was well done.

Andriessen

We sang Prayer of St Richard of Chichester by L.J.White. I have sung this since I was a boy 63 years ago. It is a classic. I played Thema met vairaties 1947 by Hendrik Andriessen. First in a series of pieces inspired by Luther's reformation and he can represent Holland. Stanley trumpet tune. Ghastly hymn to a Swiss waltz. Got plants and wine from fete raffle.  Not sure that Revd Donna Lazenby did her book Divine Sparks justice at St Paul's cathedral. She does have a prophetic vision of the church giving to the community. Why did the chair insist on questions? Comments are also valuable! Interesting that giving away tea and coffee on a cold train platform got people talking. Church is so often about taking!  listening to the historic broadcast of evensong from St Peter's Rome by Merton College chapel choir. Pity the sopranos are not united in tone and one sticks out. Good to hear Wood and Bairstow.

Summer fair

Tidied up at home hearing aid had fallen into drawer!Summer fair at St John Caterham. Lots had a go on the organ  . 10 of St John's school choir sang. Got parent's details. One possible recruit for the choir. Pimms and hot dog. Weather OK. I engaged with a lot of people and one possible recruit for Christmas carols. Fr Brian at Vespers and Mass for dedication of the cathedral. Cardinal Vaughan sang Mawby, Schubert and Palestrina. Picked up Sean from Dennis's and finally got him off to seep at 10! Liz back from Liverpool.
