Two Popes

Mass at Anerley. Very fine letter from Archbishop John Wilson. . Much as I love Colossians Paul knew little about wives. Watched The Two Popes on Netflix and loved it! Antiques roadshow and The trial of Christine Keeler were good. Mass and we both went to see Cats which was pretty amazing. Makeup and production can't be faulted. Spent the afternoon editing the catalogue. Programme on lynxes.

Interfaith

Swam 20. Emails about St Michael's organ recital series. Cambridge pretty well fixed up - 7 organs are possible! Read article on scriptural reasoning. To Methodist central hall for Boroughs interfaith forum - the room was noisy and my right hand hearing aid is not working. It was interesting to reflect on 10 years of the forum but I had to leave to go to Hinsley room for Lent group - 5 came and it was a good session. Crozier bearer for Bishop John at Mass and choir sang Berkeley. Bishop John reflected on Pope Benedict's last day. Faith matters with Archbishop Stack on art - it was a bitty talk with some good bits especially on the Crucifixion. There should have been more pictures and more on art in churches rather than in galleries.

Dupuis

Friday swam only 18 as pool clock not working and the small one was missing so told Clare. I got out too early! Spent the whole morning finishing the Dupuis essay - it's not great but it will have to do. Liz went to cathedral for Mass in thanksgiving for Benedict. I glued the mosaic to the board but some pieces are missing so cannot do more until I borrow some tile cutters. Emailed Cambridge colleges about May 4th. Looked up previous Cambridge visits 2005, 2007 and 2009 so the blog proved very useful.

The Pope resigns!

Monday woke to snow so waited 30 minutes for a 468 and eventually got one northbound. I saw the first southbound one at Hermitage Road and it was full. 2 empty ones went by! To West Norwood and at mosaic by 10.35. Nicky was unpleasant about tea so told Linda we needed a rota. Unimpressed to have to pay £4 for wooden blocks and on the day when everything had to be taken home too! Hendrika took tai chi - she is much lower to the ground than Tony! Liz picked me up. Finished the Dubois articles. Watched programme on art in Rome, University challenge, Food and drink and Dancing on the edge. Pope shocked the world by resigning although he had hinted at it before. A brave and sensible decision. We watched the BAFTA awards last night and it was quite interesting! Tuesday woke early and no snow!

Essay

2 days spent writing 2500 words on Taylor. Submitted it but now thinking I did not make a good argument. Actually I agree with a lot of what he says. Used Pope's writings as a back up and useful Rowan Williams quotes too. The 4000 word essay looks daunting but the most relevant is probably the one on secularism and Islam. Good TV on Monday - University challenge, Mrs Brown's boys which is recorded on set in front of an audience, An Island parish is back, Royal bodyguard with David Jason who is hilarious. To Acton - got to Selhurst and Liz did not have computer so I went on station to find Willesden Junction train was cancelled. At Clapham Junction missed Willesden train and caught a Richmond one. Liz got the next one and caught up at Richmond. My new phone playing up again. Watched British musicals part 1 and 100 years of the Palladium.

The Pope!

Image
Friday to meeting at Battersea and a phone call about Monday's disaster. To choir and 2 missing but we covered all the ground and had a discussion prior to the meeting due for October 1st. As John cannot come on 3rd and 17th asked choir to make suggestions and we tried a few more items in the Oxford book of flexible anthems some of which the choir rejected immediately! Watched at 6 p.m. the memorable service from Westminster Abbey. Rowan Williams gave a great address and so did the Pope. His speech in Westminster Hall was impressive too. Liz has been watching the live web cast 24 hours coverage. Saturday we were up in good time to watch the Mass from the cathedral which was most impressive. wonderful music as there was at the Abbey and again a very fine homily. We spotted the servers and people we know. Sad that we were not asked to take part but there were some girl servers! We left for Hyde Park and arrived there at 3 p.m. so we were in the second row of the invited pilgrims area...

Ian Coleman

Monday was a horrid day. The caretaker did not turn up so there was a mess not cleared up from the afternoon event so the yoga teacher was most unpleasant although we did our best to clear up and Chris came back to lock up. Tuesday spent time rearranging shelves ready for the self issue machines arrival. This was a waste of time as on Wednesday my superiors moved stands as they saw fit. No doubt yet another boss will have other ideas next week. Am I branch librarian? Thursday brought the news that SP had to go to see her grandmother in Barbados so we will be short. I wish I could retire now and not in one year's time! Wednesday the picture frames arrived so the pictures are up at last! Spent time using the new Sebo which is most impressive. To St Michael's for Ian Coleman's recital. He played his own sonata and the Elgar sonata. Enjoyed baked potato with Francis, Michael and Ian. He was delighted we are come and he played well. Fed up with old computer - took ages to do Oct...

Bank holiday weekend

A quiet weekend with mixed weather. Sorted out stuff upstairs and reorganised shelves having packed Dennis's numerous books into boxes! Went to Glyn Close. Served at Mass as usual with said Vespers. Told Fr Michael about interfaith group interest in the Pope's visit. Mum and Dad in the prayers - have now been blogging for 4 years! Baptism at Coulsdon and I played Liebster Jesu and Dubois Toccata. In car to library to take dustbins (been replaced at home) and microwave. Staff meeting for Sunday staff was useful. Finished reading "Wolf Hall" which is brilliant and listening to Proms. Family prom was fun, Edinburgh Tattoo and University Challenge. Ein Heldenleben from Prom conducted by Mark Elder. Frustrating day at work as fallback still on as new system failed. Ended up stricting! Mind you the library needs it - such a mess! Act 2 of Hansel and Gretel on radio from Glyndebourne Prom.

Choristers, monks and Catenians

At Friday's practice I was quite firm and insisted on everyone doing the exercises and warm-up. Saturday had a lie-in. I have finished "The 39 steps" for the reading group and enjoyed it if a little dated and imperialistic! I am currently enjoying "John" by Niall Williams (Tablet recommendation) and "Only strange people go to church" by Laura Marney. My Lenten reading is all set with new book by Gordon Giles, Timothy Ratcliffe and the Holy Spirit booklet. To Hinsley Room for talk by Fr Augustine Hoey on a Way of life. He told us about monks and nuns and the questions were more interesting than the talk. John East and Louise Sage were there. These "Justice and Peace group" talks have little to do with J and P. Tablet has much about the Pope's decision to excommunicate Bishop Williamson who denies the Holocaust! How stupid can you get! Now we learn some Austrian priest who says hurricane Katrina was a retribution for homosexuality in New ...
