Zimbabwe
Saturday to Moss Bros to be measured for the wedding tail coat. The assistant kept asking me my measurements - I thought the object of the exercise was for him to measure me!
To Southwark cathedral for evensong at 4 p.m. Vickie was there and prayers were said for Zimbabwe. We remember Rose Gill from our congregation and the group with Bishop Nick Baines of Croydon who are in Zimbabwe at the moment. Rose took a lovely booklet about the church with her along with the tape and CD we had made.
When we lived in Johannesburg, Mum, Dad, Ann and I had a wonderful holiday in Zimbabwe. The war was still going on so we saw soldiers at Victoria Falls. The flight over the falls must be the most thrilling experience of my travels all over the world - it truly is the flight of angels. The Victoria Falls hotel had all the old world charm and standards of the past. At Wankie the game warden knew exactly where to take us to see the wildlife. Dad remarked to him that he must phone the elephants to warn them! We visited Kariba dam and Salisbury and had a memorable weekend at the Troutbeck Inn which was later burnt down. We also visited a crocodile farm near Victoria Falls. We said then how much more relaxed the atmosphere between black and white was compared to South Africa. It is deeply distressing that this country has been brought to its knees and we must pray for everyone concerned, not least our Catenian brothers who we remember at every meeting. As Desmond Tutu has said, how can such a regime survive when someone is praying for it at 2 a.m. on the other side of the world!
At 6 p.m. Mass at the cathedral the full impact of the wonderful flowers could be seen. We sang 2 favourite hymns "Battle is o'er" with its super tune by Dom Gregory Murray and "Godhead here in hiding" and the Durham University chamber choir sang superbly - Victoria O quam gloriosum motet and mass and Villette "Panis angelicus". The MacMillan Mass is back! Simon Lloyd was having fun with exciting improvisations before the Gospel acclamation and at the end!
Caught up on some HDD recordings about Chelsea pensioners and programme about Mary Magdalene.
Battle is o'er, hell's armies flee, raise we the cry of victory .....
Never tiring be our choiring, Alleluia!
