Wednesday

Pretty exhausting day Tuesday. Swam 36 lengths and No I did not use the car! Only 3 staff on in the evening so unable to go to Catenian provincial council meeting. It's in Sittingbourne which is a 70 mile drive. Harry Mellor of South London circle rang and offered a lift so will take him up on that. Plus I have to take leave to go and be bored all evening so what's the point? Most of it could be done by email. Watched University professional challenge won by an impressive team from the Ministry of Justice who beat Salisbury cathedral last night and National physical laboratory this evening in the final. Watched Songs of Praise from Edinburgh with interesting material about Greyfriars Kirk, Greyfriars Bobby and David Steel's ancestor. Fell asleep! Oxgord trip booklet now revised by Chris and looking very impressive.
Have at last finished James Naughtie's "The Making of music, a journey with notes" which is a useful historical treatment with some interesting comments on modern trends. He sees great hope in the work of MacMillan and Tavener. Sorted out my papers and did some comments on Society of St Gregory website. Spoke to Graham in Glasgow on Skype. Weather improved at lunchtime - it had been sunny but cold. Liz got more stones for the garden and I put up pictures. Watched Dan Cruickshank visiting St Catherine's monastery in Sinai (where we will be going), Chinese and Indian temples and a Russian church in the snow. Songs of Prasie from Rochester, In cold blood on snakes and Antiques Roadshow from Sheffeld. Also read 2 Choir and Organ and Tablet.
Lunchtime recital at St Michael's given by Robin Walker from St Mary's Hampstead. Bach Toccata, adagio and fugue in C. 2nd piece not announced - it was S.S.Wesley's Adagio in C. Elgar Sonata very well played. Had a chat to Ken who is going up to Oxford early for the visit.
To Westminster cathedral for the first of the recital series. Bought a season ticket for which you get a programme and a cushion - excellent idea! Saw Pauline, Oliver, Fr Tim and Francis but not a large audience. Several choirboys there. Matthew Martin played very well. Walton Orb and Sceptre (I note that Dad bought the score in 1953), Buxtehude, Schumann, Martin Passacaille, Bach Ricercare and stunning Dupre Prelude and fugue in B.
Home to watch The Apprentice.
