Ciarán's baptism

Picked up Clare and Josie and arrived early at East Acton so had apple pie and coffee. Fr Danny at St Aidan's was a delight and we laughed about the spies from the Cathedral. The famous Sutherland picture worth 1 and a half million was covered up during building works! Ciarán seemed happy beforehand, cried during the ceremony and then smiled for the photos including a photo with everyone. We then went to the Goldsmiths Arms for a hog roast and delicious cakes which was great! Managed to get a family photo. Roger and Helen had come over from Ireland. Bruce and Pat Maher were godparents and I had a good chat to Pat. Also met NCT class folks notably Rufus and Merle whose parents teach/taught at St Paul's school. I have an invite to go and see Holst's chair! Such nice people. We left around 8 with left over pork and cakes! Got an early night but I was really upset about John Linney's email about Good Friday. To say that I show a lack of commitment to the church after nearly...

Ciarán

Swam as usual Thursday and Friday. To Catenian council meeting at Brendan's and then Xin restaurant in West Wickham for delicious Chinese meal with lots of variety although never very filling. At the very end Jim swung the circular table centre round and a glass of tonic water went all over my trousers! In the car and home to change! Liz was at confirmation class and late back. Friday more weeding and tidying up - I even found a Christmas decoration behind the fax machine! Off at 5 and to Thornton Heath and Josie's road where Liz got fish and chips. Louise and Ciarán at home and he enjoyed his bath. They had visited Grandma. To choir practice - organ is out of tune and I will use piano on Sunday. The choir were arguing again about tempi, leaving out notes, you name it. At one point I said "Who's conducting this choir any way?" Also a question about Good Friday just as we were about to rehearse an item. They are infuriating. Watched "Embarrassing bodies"....

Tooting library

Chat to Ann - wants me to wear a bow tie on Saturday like Dad did and I found a keyboard one in my drawer! 3 at Lent group - Monique and Joan. To Tate Britain to see Henry Moore exhibition - lots of people there. A fine video by a woman artist Laura Prouvost- very striking. To Tooting for the opening of the library. A stunning space and a vast improvement on the old place. Saw lots of former colleagues. Mr Vaizey Shadow minister for the arts was pretty colourless and talked about the Deputy Mayor's car! Met Balham society rep and Age Concern lady. Nice eats and useful chats about lift and self issue! To King's College hospital on tube and bus to see Grandma who is in pain form back and arm. She will not make the baptism on Saturday. Watched Syrian school and programme on the relationship between baby and mother in the womb - a delicate balance. Liz made mayonnaise salad. Chat to Ross on Facebook.

Work

Monday my shoulder and left thigh were hurting so had a lie-in and no swim. 2 8 o' clock nights in a row. DS came and looked at self-issue preparation. Weeding. Tuesday 38 lengths although it was busy. Absolutely appalled at call from Martin Cross about painter in organ chamber painting arch and being so rude to him so did full report. Watched Sue Perkins reviving a brass band but skipped out of "One born every minute" about childbirth. Have nearly finished Bobbie Darbyshire's "Love revenge and buttered scones".

Gillian's party

Tai chi with DVD before going to work - cannot get used to the 9.30 a.m. start on Saturdays. To 99p shop and got weedkiller, trowel, plug strainers and washing up brushes for the library. Did game plan and polished up staff meeting minutes. To Tooting Bec for Mass - church cold again and mike not working so Fr Daniel whose English is not good any way was hard to hear. To Gillian Warrior's flat at Prince of Wales Mansions for reading group farewell which was lovely - nice eats and Liz came. A nice card from them all. It was delightful! To church where we sang "Bread of the world" arr Bullard and Ps 61 to plainchant. The Wood setting was a bit thin - 2 sopranos not there. Molly very keyed up about getting first badge next Sunday. Practised and then to King's for lunch with Liz - nice lamb. I tripped outside the hospital and fell - my shoulder and left thigh hurt a bit. Grandma in pain from her arm. To Compline and played Bach and Brahms - 9 there. Watched Antiques road...

Grandma

Thursday to see Dr Attard with Liz. Worked 11 to 8 because I had done until 7 on Monday. Not a happy arrangement. Lift not working again. More weeding. Friday worked until 2. Chris D came to look at notices and arrangement. Attended Golden years reading group session - a lively group. Buses to King's to see Grandma - a nice room with a lovely view. The Catholic chaplain came to give her communion. No practice and watched part of a programme about Schubert and Embarrassing bodies.

A good Wednesday

Spoke to Ann. I was up early clearing up the kitchen and ironing shirts. Lent group 3 joined by 2 more who had come for spirituality day with Claire Blood. 15 there. It was on "Blessed are the poor in spirit". 2 sisters from Maria Assumpta Helena and Bernadette. Henrietta distinguished herself describing her hoarding - Sister said she was like Queen Victoria. To tea at St Martin's in the Fields to meet Fr Rob Laws from Washington DC - Liz came too. Nice to meet him at last! To MacMillan rehearsal - it seems we are travelling by train to Cambridge on Good Friday. Listened to Wakefield Cathedral evensong and bought Retreats association book so found a good one at Belmont Abbey. Also contacted the London centre for spirituality again.

Sunshine

40 lengths. Louise came over to meet Lizzie Martin and her baby. I missed them as I was on until 8. Weeded Science fiction much of it very dirty. Cappucino at cafe across road as sunny. Health and safety inspection went O.K. Having tea in the staff room when the mouse run in and under the chairs where I was sitting so I put down the bait which was in my office. I have never liked mice - we once had one that died in the piano which I had to remove. We recently had a dead pigeon in the garden. Reading group are lively. Liz wastching One born every minute. The Tablet had excellent articles on caring for the elderly. For once the crossword defeated me.

Lenten reading

Each day I am reading Carroll Stuhlmueller's commentary on the scriptures of the day, Magnificat, Living as One and Paul Wesley Chilcote's "The song for ever new" commentaries for Lent and Easter on Charles Wesley's hymns. This is in addition to morning and evening prayer and The Tablet!

Catenians

Missed early bus as I left my swimming stuff behind. Dennis off to interview in Harrow. Onlt did 24 lengths as I was late. Liz picked up swim stiff - she had left her costume behind. Saw 2 more staff members and weeded large print books. To Catenians and met Phil Roberts who fell on the tram but was O.K. Colin gave me a lift home.
