St Matthew Passion

I have been working on my life story again and am very struck at the number of concerts, operas and ballets that were broadcast on BBC2 in the 70s. Now we are reduced to the occasional programme on BBC4 often not announced in advance. Lord Reith would be horrified! The same goes for religious programmes on TV which are a shadow of what used to be shown. Part 1 of the St Matthew Passion Netherlands Bach society Van Veldhoven on YouTube. Superb soloists and I like the way the soloists sing everything. The 6 boys shine through! St Matthew passion part 2 wonderful. Mark Potter amazing. Just listened to Kathleen Ferrier accompaniment is so plodding! I grew up going to hear this on records (Klemperer) which Anna Gabler played on Palm Sunday in Johannesburg and Dad and I sang chorales.i first heard it live in Florence in 1972 with Kurt Equiluz. Bach choir once and once at St Martin's. I think at the Proms and sang it at St John's. It's like Everest a gigantic work. Simple evening prayer from Portsmouth cathedral. The Royal banners beautifully sung. Holy Week at home? What to watch and when? It's a nightmare! I am going to be online all day at this rate. Caterham, cathedral, Upper Norwood, Portsmouth cathedral, Derby cathedral.
Palm Sunday Should we process to the shed? And back again? Will the neighbours think we have flipped if we sing in procession? But what about the step and the pots of plants not to mention the washing line? I think an indoor procession would be more practical and pitch can be checked as we pass the piano.
Wife: "What! You are joking aren't you?"
Me: "I could video it" Wife: That is a definite NO!
Easter Vigil mmm 5,45 a,m a tad early and I don't think fires outside are encouraged round here. Sat 9 p.m. might work. Shall we have a real treat and do ALL the psalms? I found a copy of that amazing Exodus psalm set by Gibbons when the pianist does a glissando to illustrate the Egyptians going to their doom. Sounds like fun better start practising.
Part-time liturgist (no negotiation possible) Lovely Schubert songs from Eleanor of Ensemble 26. Titian behind closed doors.
