New job
My first Sunday at Beckenham Methodist went well once I actually got in! I played Ley on Down Ampney, two Harold Darke pieces, Eric Smith and Andrew Moore and it was much appreciated. Lots of Davids in the congregation and very friendly. The steward arrived 40 minutes after I got there. David has now told me the code. We went to Wibberleys for Death cafe - the best turnout yet and interesting chats. Sorted out boxes knocked over in front garden (fox?) and swept kitchen. Miss Austen, Antiques roadshow, pottery throwdown and Call the midwife.
Monday chat to Ann. Liz to GP infection and she went to UNACC and the lake. The road was closed at Waldegrave so did a big dteour round Crystal Palace to get to Penge East station. I went to the Ukranian Catholic cathedral for interfaith service for 3rd anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine. The singing and playing was very moving and Rabbi Jonathan spoke really well. I did have a short chat and saw Bishop Jim Currie. Nice eats and chatting to Dominic and Colette. Also met Gillian and Edna. Walked to Mount Street to see the paintings of Rome which were overpriced and disappointing. Fr Nicholas King appeared. To the King's Gallery superb Italian renaissance drawings. Tuesday swim and Liz tried singing for the brain at Foulsham Hall - it's just songs on a screen. Quiet time and discussion about Trump. Cleared up twigs in garden. Erik Varden on his Lent book interviewed by Paula Gooder. Stacey sorting out a crammed house.
Wed swim Liz came with me to Beckenham Methodist and had a good practice. David says Harry Bramma who is 88 has been in hospital. Quiche and salad. Buses to St Aloysius convent Euston. Lovely place and garden. Sr MaryAnne showed us round and we discussed June event. Anita and Cecilia came. Met Liz at West Norwood picturehouse. Thoroughly enjoyed NT Importance of being Earnest. Very funny and original production.
Thursday took Liz to Dulwich. Art and finished the horse. Swim. Set off on bus to Carers centre only to realise it is closed so got bus back. The carers sessions I wanted is online. LS zoom was good. I was thankful for the warm response to the news about Liz's dementia and forgot to save the transcript and chat! Apprentice - Jana quit!
Friday Dennis came. I went to UNACC and told class about the way to avoid falls when turning - slow marching. Picked up Liz and we went to Croydon Minster to hear Chingyan Lo play Bach, Vierne, Franck and Dupre very well. She looks so young! Sue told me where Julie Smith is now. Saw the plaque for Martin How. To Science museum for Versailles exhibition which was interesting. Best thing the rhino and animal and plant paintings. Trump shows his true colours as an ignorant bully. I hope President Zelensky refuses to sign. Why shouldn’t Ukraine keep its resources and its sovereignty? Father Brown, Would I lie to you. We had plaice and chips. BBC Philharmonic playing Enigma, Part Swan song, Frank Martin sung by Roderick Williams and a new work for bassoon and orchestra ANima mea by Geoffrey Gordon.
Sat SM Regent's Park. A delightful coffee concert at St John Upper Norwood Stephen Dickinson's trio for oboe bassoon and piano, Madeleine Dring's trio and the incomparable Poulenc trio. Stephen played Gershwin. Helen Raggatt oboe and Miles Chapman bassoon. It was good to meet members of the English Baroque choir and friends and the children were very well-behaved! To St Augustine Kilburn for reopening of the Father Willis organ by Martin Baker. Not a very popular programme! Widor, Dupre, improvisations, Tournemire. Dan Cruickshank on the Scott family and African penguins.
Sunday Lovely Mass at St John Upper Norwood with the interment of the ashes of David Riches. Sumsion in F, My eyes for beauty pine Howells. Discussion of the Medieval women exhibition with Fr Tom over lunch. The catalogue confirms what I thought - this exhibition has too much in it but it's fascinating! Bruce, Dennis and Henry are putting the Christmas trees away. They are too heavy for me to handle! Liz sang at evensong. I spoke at Hyderi mosque iftar on Faith and the environment emphasising Laudato Si'. The Sikh was very pessimistic, the Hindu and Muslim did not really meet the brief!
