Wrote to Gerard. Unacc exercises. Got bulbs at electric suppliers. Very hot. Liz took old quilts and got new table cover and recycling bins at Dunelms. Wimbledon. I hung up the picture of the garden and tidied up. Sent a reminder about the public speaking in October. Fell asleep in lounge. Bruce arrived. Liz's photo is in The Tablet - at the funeral of Bruce Kent!
Sat up early. Chat to Bruce about storage and clutter. To Tate Britain with Nelson and Chris. Sickert is amazing although later works not so good! Good conversation over tea and Portuguese cakes. SM in Parliament square. B. Andrew Nunn retiring in a year.
Sunday backache which started last night! Too much walking at Tate Britain holding stick and folding chair in other hand? Played Willan on St Peter and Bishopthorpe, Purcell minuets and Trumpet tune and air. Lynda sang How beautiful are the feet so beautifully. Actually had 4 in the choir. She is like a gift from heaven. I do hope she stays! Came home and changed into shorts - very hot! Picked up Liz and Clare. Rosendale was great - roast beef and chocolate brownie. So nice that Rosemary and her sister Pauline joined us. It is such a rare treat to have us all together. Sorted out summer for the boys. Ciaran in first week of August volleyball at Crystal Palace. We will take Henry and Sean to the coast and stay overnight so we can be at Drusillas at 10 a.m. Fell asleep. Watched Antiques roadshow and Paula Rego film made by her son. While I am against abortion I do understand her campaign against illegal abortion in Portugal and the inherent cruelty of that society. Must discuss with Nelson! Walter Sickert painted a series of great paintings showing the seamer side of Camden with a clothed man and a nude woman. He used the same models. But was it sensationalism to call them The Camden Street murder? This raises the deeper question of the moral purpose of showing such art. Tate Britain has hung a Lucian Freud of a nude woman in this section. Is just is not as well done as the Sickert, Degas or the Bonnard. What is it doing there is such a prominent position? I also found several of Sickert's music hall paintings disturbing with faces which are inhuman blobs. Caricatures really.
