To the hidden community garden at Norwood Junction and learnt of the excellent work with schools by the British Transport Police resulting in a drop in trespassing. Apparently East European adults forget and try to go home on the tracks. Really worrying. To Boots to see optician and ended up getting 2 pairs of new glasses. To Central music library and found all the scores I wanted. Life drawing at National Portrait Gallery - did 8 sketches in 2 hours. Quite tired and also carrying 2 bags of scores! Swam 30! Listened to Liverpool cathedral evensong from yesterday - Vaughan Williams, Whitlock and Howells - who could ask for better on this special day! So sad about the General Synod decision against women bishops - how disappointing and out of touch can you be? Went in good time to rehearse for Mass as Westminster cathedral tour was off (pity about that as I had bought the guidebook but maybe I can volunteer as a verger/guide next year). Ended up rehearsing harmonies of Praise my soul and Hail redeemer King divine. The psalm which was about singing was said - why? Jerry is lazy that's why! 2 plainchant chunks sung by soloists from gallery. We did not even run through Proulx Alleluia! Fr Michael Barnes gave a brilliant homily on interfaith - first time I have ever heard one at Mass. To coffee and chat about Synod decision. The Westminster Cathedral Easter candle - the Coulsdon one is much smaller! All went well at Coulsdon. There was light snow as we left and a service from Liverpool Anglican cathedral on the radio with Mozart Spatzen Mass and tremendous organ sound. We had a mini-Vigil with Exultet version sung to Woodlands preceded by fanfare by Andrew Moore and bells and noise! Christ the Lord is risen today was shortened as there was no decorating of the Lenten cross with flowers. Haydn Missa St Johannis de Deo but no Benedictus. Bob Witham sang tenor. Now the green blade, Jesus lives! Christ is alive! and The day of resurrection were the other hymns. At communion the choir enjoyed "This joyful Eastertide". at the end I played Saraband for the morning of Easter by Howells. Sherry afterwards and met Reg who is a baritone and seems keen on the choir. Suggested to Dudley he should come along too. Got petrol on way home and have had 2 little chocolate eggs so far. Liz served at the funeral Mass for Helene La Rue. I had to stay at work due to staff shortages. Fr Peter celebrated the Mass and lots of old friends were there. I played for Jo La Rue's funeral. She loved music and danced in "Job" for Vaughan Williams. She knew Dom Gregory Murray and Holst. Helene looked after the Bate collection of musical instruments in Oxford and was a kind and delightful host when I sang in the concerts at the Sheldonian. She helped so much with the organ tours as she knew all the organ scholars. Lunch with her at St Cross College was a delight. I shall miss her so much. She sang in the choir every Sunday and played the organ when needed. She stood in for Easter Vigil for me at Addiscombe when I had my knee op. The set psalm today was "Horse and rider he has thrown into the sea!" as for the Vigil. She was only 55. May she rest in peace.
