Snow!

Went swimming with Liz and swam only 18 as we were late. Came out to find it was snowing and it continued all day. Car in Whitworth Road. Cleaned my shaver and the muck! Working much better. Did some reading. Phoned Wandsworth Unison and I am getting a refund of £392 - I should not have been paying every month by direct debit!

Catenians, organists committee, Croydon Parish church

Image
A mirror image! Fred Irvine played after me. Now have 2 work experience students who seem to get on well with each other. The newspaper cuttings file about Battersea is now up to date at last. Catenians was a delightful meeting with lots of visitors. Tuesday July 7 to Moira's for organists committee which I chaired and a full house. Interesting programme ahead including Belfast tour! Wed July 8th to unison committee meeting. After they had wittered on about the racism report I gave my health and safety report and then made tracks! Parked at Croydon Parish church and to Tim Harper's excellent recital at St Michael's. Whitlock sonata. Back to the parish church only to find Andrew had not booked my practice time and Fred Irvine was there. He said Sanderstead would take part in the deanery evensong in September. Back home and tried to put Grandma's new metal garden chairs together (Liz took them back and got the shop show ones!). To Coulsdon and chose music with Vickie for ...

Peter Wright

To Unison committee meeting - quite short this time. I reported on asbestos and swine flu under health and safety. To St Michael's for organ recital by Peter Wright. Muffat, Bach Prelude and fugue in C, Hollins Song of sunshine which is a lollipop, Vierne Feux follets and Demessieux Te Deum (she used to play in high heels!). Liz was there having had her haircut. Grandma OK. Had coffee and cakes with Peter, Adrian and Graham. Passed on compliments to the Dean for yesterday's sermon. I have finished Jill Dawson's remarkable novel about Rupert Brooke "The great lover". This explores many themes especially sex and death. Not for the easily shocked!

A great day

Up early and did May music list. No sign of Ann on Skype. I swam 38 yesterday and 36 on Monday. To Town hall for Unison branch committee meeting and we heard about the proposed learning agreement. Buses and train to the Temple church for Ann-Elise Smoot's recital of Bach and Brahms Passiontide pieces. I thought "O wie selig" a tad fast and the registration of "Aus tiefer not" was too thick at the end. Martin Ball was there and surprised to see me as I vowed not to go there again after being locked out twice! Bus and millennium bridge to Tate Modern. My renewed card worked OK on the Horn exhibition which I did not much care for especially the room of photos of a woman looking at us! My card then did not work for the Russian exhibition so I will have to return. Giant spider in the hall. To the cathedral and arrived early so bought Tablet (at last - renewed subscription not come through yet). Served at Tenebrae which was broadcast on Radio 3 and the singing of Vict...

Lent group

Set out the black sheet in the garden ready for more stones. Chatted to David up the road and little Katy - amazing how he climbs over their fence and walks about in bare feet. He will take some of our sawn up tree for his garden. To Wandsworth Unison AGM which was not quorate. John Hawes is applying for verger job at Salisbury Cathedral. 3 good speakers. 7 servers at Mass including Joseph who does all sorts of extra bows! 7 at Lent group which Virginia led. Pauline said she has spoken in tongues. We considered Pentecost and the early church living in common which sadly soon split. Saw Tanya and Sam outside Victoria station - Sam used to go to Newton prep and now goes to Heathbrook school. Watched programmes on the baroque and the Okavango flood.

Fidelio and choirs

Wednesday to Unison committee meeting and raised health and safety matters and the snow - we have to take leave for that day which is most unfair. Liz went to Colin Grant's funeral at Addiscombe and was warmly welcomed. To Coulsdon to choose hymns up to May with Sue and Vickie. To chorus rehearsal with Madeleine Lovell who is very demanding. Thursday I was early at Queensgate Terrace, Kensington so to Starbucks for a cappuccino and finished reading "Rome and Canterbury" by Mary Neath. A delightful concert with piano and we sang the prisoners' chorus. Only 4 of the originals from Orange 30 years ago were singing tonight. Madeleine was excellent and a wealthy and friendly audience including Lord Trimble. Very nice selection of wines and nibbles. Returned home to freezing house - the motor on the boiler was finally fixed on Saturday but it all went off again the same day! Brought the fan heater from church. Friday's practice I was furious as one member said she would...
