Cambridge

Jesus College Kuhn and Sutton organs.
Friday back to the pool and after the Lord Mayor's show! Set up small book sale. To doctor about pains in right leg and back - he checked me over and gave me powerful painkillers as ibuprofen can affect stomach lining. To choir practice which was more relaxed - Ella was pretty hyper again.
Saturday May 23rd Liz took me to Shirley for 7.15 a.m. lift with David and Sheila. We reached Robinson college staff car park early - around 9.30 a.m. Daniel Trocme Latter gave an excellent demonstration of the Frobenius organ and we enjoyed playing it. A lovely walk across the Backs to Trinity college where the organ scholar Michael Waldron played Bach. Bromley and Croydon organists played first so East Surrey group had to wait! Very awkward stop jambs on the Metzler. A stunning chapel. To Little St Mary's where Christian Rutherford greeted us and the scholar Sebastian Smallshaw played Howells and Parry very well. This is a fine Tickell beautifully constructed with great economy of space and a joy to play. I played Alan Gray from the little organ book and climbed inside the case! Christian as a horn player knew Ian Beers! Lunch at Michaelhouse - delicious Catalan casserole and lemon curd tart. To Jesus college where we again met with East Surrey contingent which included Terence Hancock and George Gray. A very fine Kuhn organ next to the Sutton organ which is unplayable. To Trinity Hall which must be the prettiest college near the river. The Carston Lund organ is excellent and ideal for Buxtehude and Bach. To tea at Michaelhouse and then King's evensong which featured Victoria and Leighton responses were well sung. To John's in time for 6.30 evensong - Berkeley Chichester service. Andrew timpanist in Philharmonia and his wife were there - their son is in the choir. Good to see Jonathan Vaughn. To Pizza express with Michael and Gloria Toplis and Martin Ball and a good meal and they kindly brought me home - 11.10 p.m. after a glorious day. A lovely walk back to the car crossing the river at sunset.
