Proms
At Coulsdon on Sunday endured "You shall go out with joy" for the 3rd time this summer and there were no children present! I played Vaughan Williams "Land of our birth" (wonderful tune) and Fantasia on Greensleeves and the beautiful Vierne Berceuse which I played 2 years ago at Mum and Dad's cremation. No need to practise so had coffee and chatted about Buckingham Palace and King Lear! Watched closing ceremony of the Olympics which was most impressive. Boris Johnson looked scruffy with jacket open and hands in pockets. Good use of London bus and wrote down lots of ideas for an opening ceremony using nursery rhymes and British things. To the Prom at 4 p.m. Simon Preston playing Bach. Met Daniel and Gill and Daniel's friend Bart. A cautious start but some fine playing and I followed most of it with my scores sitting on the floor. Halfway through some guy complained about the cushion squeaking. It was a plastic inflatable one BP issued at the ballet in Canary Wharf. He must have superhuman hearing to hear that above the organ and Daniel wondered what the fuss was about as I was sitting very still! Some people! Good audience for it but not as big as for the St John Passion conducted by Gardiner which we watched on BBC4. Beautifully sung with great conviction. Saw Peter. Followed with score. Listened to Bach cello suites on radio 3. So 3 good Proms in a day all Bach!
Monday was a Bank holiday and watched Tchaikovsky 5th on BBC4 RPO conducted by Gatti and followed with score and conducted bits! Also Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet excerpts very well played and dramatically conducted. To Grandma's and finished off the garden cutting (2 hours) so she took us for a meal at Harvesters. I had ribeye steak and tiramisu sundae - very nice. Liz got a new router and I did music list for September.
Tuesday to Vaughan Williams prom - long queue and took soft cushion and sat at back of arena to get some air. Saw Terence. Fantasia on a theme of Tallis, Job, Serenade to music and Symphony No. 9 (I sat down for the latter). Sir Andrew Davis conducted BBCSO. Lovely programme and I got a 452 and train from Battersea Park quickly. I swam 36 lengths in the morning. Lauren arrived back from Amsterdam.
Wednesday chat to Ann and Dennis. Lauren having a quiet day. To osteopath - my side and back fine and worked on left shoulder.
